Australia's most popular grape varietal, Shiraz is full-bodied with vibrant berry and plum on both the nose and palate. The hot summers and cooler winters add a complexity and structure to wines that collect well and are worldwide favorites. The wines are often described as robust and spicy with a slightly sweet finish and velvety mouthfeel. Shiraz is actually the same grape as the Syrah grape found in other places of the world - for example France. Syrah migrated to Australia (and changed its name along the way) in the 19th century and flourished, taking on characteristics of the local flora. Eucalyptus is often mentioned as a very distinct taste in the Australian Shiraz. It could be because of the oil found on the eucalyptus leaves but actually no one has ever really been able to tell why.   Growing to commercial prominence in the last decade of the 20th century, Shiraz is a fan favorite the world over and is a great wine for lovers of big reds. Do like the Aussies and pair your Shiraz with anything that can go on the grill or try it with a hearty bean or lentil casserole. Any kind of burger is also a match made in heaven. You should definitely try it!
