Châteauneuf-du-Pape
The literal translation of Châteauneuf-du-Pape is "Pope's new castle”, a throwback to the middle ages when the papal court under Clement V was relocated to the region. It was also the first wine region designated as an AOC (Appellation d’Origine Contrôlée), a system in France which signifies quality wine.
There are more than 15 permitted grape varieties in the region. These all contribute something to the finished wine, whether it's flavor, aromas, color, or structure.
The main red grapes here are Grenache, Mourvèdre and Syrah, a combination that creates the bold and spicy wines the region is known for. The rare white wines are produced primarily from Grenache blanc, Clairette, Bourboulenc, and Roussanne grapes. Only six percent of production is white, and they can be difficult to find. If you are able to get a hold of a bottle, expect it to be full-bodied and rich.
Some wines are early drinking, but many can age up to 30 years. Pro tip: You can quickly spot a Châteauneuf-du-Pape by the coat of arms with a papal crest embossed on the shoulder of the bottle. All wines from the region bear this symbol.Show more
