Chianti is nestled within the larger wine region of Tuscany, an area that conjures up thoughts of rolling green hills and picturesque Roman ruins. This area is famous for Sangiovese, and Chianti is one of the most productive hotspots for the grape, producing a lovely wines with tart and fresh flavors of cherry, strawberries, and red plums. When you spot 'Classico' on your Chianti label, this refers to the original historic growing area which tends to have the best vineyards. The regional mascot, a distinctive black rooster, is displayed on the neck of the bottle. Expect wines loaded up with red cherries and sun-dried tomatoes, earthy notes and herbs, tobacco from aging, and a bit of balsamico. Italian Chianti is versatile with food but will really shine paired with pizza, tomato-based dishes or grilled meats infused with fresh herbs, like rosemary.
