Chenin Blanc

Honung, persikor och tropiska frukter
This chameleon of a white wine grape has become more popular over the years with South Africa currently taking the spot as the largest producer overtaking France.

Depending on the winemaking style, Chenin Blanc wines vary in flavor and aroma. Chenin Blancs from the Loire Valley in France are often sweeter than those from South Africa and the wines can display great aging potential, which is rare for white wines.

Although Chenin Blanc’s influence in the Loire Valley is decreasing, it still produces the widest selection of wines in the region. The versatile grape is an important component in Loire sparkling wines. For the bubbly Chenin Blanc experience look for Crémant de Loire, Vouvray and sparkling Saumur.

As the most planted variety in South Africa Chenin Blanc, which also goes under the name Steen, will vary in flavor, but the majority are zesty and fruity and recently more winemakers are producing a slightly oaky alternative. It is also often blended with either Viognier or Chardonnay.

With such a wide array of varietals, the wines are often categorized into the following: Blended, oaky, fresh and fruity or sweet. This might serve as a helpful rule of thumb when looking for your favorite Chenin Blanc flavors.
