Interessante Fakten

  1. Russian winemaking dates back over 2000 years, when first the Phoenicians and later the ancient Greeks colonized the Black Sea coast, bringing with them their viticultural knowledge. Despite this long history, Russia has one of Europe’s few remaining undiscovered great terroirs. Concentrated within the Krasnodar region (also known as Kuban), and on the same latitude as Bordeaux, it has the ideal climatic conditions for producing great wine.

The undisputed king of Russian white wine is Chardonnay. Light or bold, crisp or buttery, mineral and zesty or fruit-forward, whichever style of Chardonnay you prefer you will find excellent examples produced in Russia. Riesling is Russia’s second most important white grape, and is used for making various monovarietal whites, blends, and sparkling wines. Russian producers are now producing memorable Rieslings, converting historical quantity (it used to be Russia’s most planted-grape) into ever-increasing quality. Interest in native grapes has also grown rapidly in recent years. For instance, Sibirkovy (either blended or on its own) is produced nowadays by many Russian wineries. Russian winemakers have also begun experimenting with other international varieties such as Grüner Veltliner, Vermentino, Petit Manseng, and Müller Thurgau.
